Vertigo (1958). Topped the once-a-decade Sight & Sound critics' poll in 2012, ending Citizen Kane's 50-year run at number one — Hitchcock's meditation on obsession, illusion, and control still unsettles audiences who go in expecting a straightforward thriller. About $4 to rent.

What's Going On — Marvin Gaye (1971). Free on any major streaming service you likely already have. Motown initially refused to release it, considering it too political for a soul record — Gaye pushed it out anyway, and it's now the album that tops more 'greatest ever' lists than almost any other single record.

Queen at Live Aid, Wembley Stadium (1985). Free on YouTube, and this is the performance that comes up almost every time anyone debates the greatest live set of all time — 20 minutes that reportedly had 72,000 people in the stadium clapping in unison to a song Freddie Mercury made up on the spot mid-set. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Winner of over 80 Game of the Year awards, and still the game other open-world games get measured against nearly a decade later. Nothing is fenced off — if you can see a mountain, you can climb it, no invisible walls pretending otherwise.
