The British Museum, London, UK. Permanently free for the entire permanent collection. The Rosetta Stone, Sutton Hoo helmet, Lewis Chessmen, and Egyptian mummies are all here. Go on a weekday morning — weekends are very crowded. Audio guides cost £7 but the free map is sufficient.

Sandeman's free walking tour, major European cities. Tip €10–15 per person for a good guide — they work on tips only and the quality is consistently excellent. Sagrada Família, Barcelona, Spain. Still unfinished after more than 140 years — Gaudí knew he wouldn't live to see it completed, and construction is genuinely still ongoing. The exterior is free to walk around and arguably the more overwhelming view; going inside costs €26–40 depending on how far up the towers you want to climb.

East Side Gallery, Berlin, Germany. 1.3km of the actual Berlin Wall, painted by over 100 artists right after it fell in 1990 — this isn't street art layered onto history, it IS the history. Free, always, and the Fraternal Kiss mural alone is worth the walk even if you've seen the photo a hundred times.

Great Wall of China (Mutianyu section). Skip Badaling — it's the closest section to Beijing and by far the most crowded. Mutianyu is about 90 minutes further out, entry runs around $10, and the cable car up (optional, extra cost) leaves you time to actually walk the wall instead of fighting through tour groups for photos.
