parkrun volunteer (2,000+ locations worldwide). Every parkrun needs 15+ volunteers to run — marshals, timekeepers, barcode scanners. Sign up on your local parkrun page. You get a volunteer credit towards the '25 volunteer' t-shirt, and the community is one of the warmest in the world.

Rio Carnival, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Watching from the street is free, always — the elaborate paid Sambadrome seats (from roughly $50) are only one part of it, and arguably not even the best part. The blocos, informal street parties that pop up in every neighbourhood for weeks beforehand, are where most of Rio actually experiences Carnival.
