Widely rated the best architecture tour in the world, and it's a real credential, not marketing copy — the docents are trained architecture buffs, not tour-company employees, and the 90-minute route past 50-plus buildings on the Chicago River is the single best introduction to why this city calls itself the birthplace of the skyscraper. At $52 it's the priciest entry on this list, but nothing else here comes close to covering this much architectural history in one sitting.

Art Institute of Chicago. Home to the second-largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art outside France, including Seurat's massive 'A Sunday on La Grande Jatte' and Grant Wood's 'American Gothic' — a genuine world-tier collection, not just a well-marketed regional museum. General admission runs $32, but Illinois residents get free entry on select days throughout the year.

Deep-dish pizza at Pequod's Pizza. The caramelized cheese crust ringing the outer edge of the pan is the thing regulars fight over, and Pequod's is one of the few deep-dish spots that actually lets that crust char instead of pulling the pie early to keep things tidy. About $22 for enough deep-dish to genuinely fill one person, easily split two ways.

Millennium Park. Cloud Gate — the reflective sculpture everyone just calls 'the Bean' — anchors a park that's entirely free to enter, including the Crown Fountain's rotating video faces spitting water onto the plaza below in summer. No admission fee for any of it, right in the heart of downtown.
