The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Two million square feet make this the largest art museum in the Western Hemisphere, and somehow the price still bends for locals: any New York State resident (or NY/NJ/CT student) can pay a literal penny at the door instead of the posted $30. Everyone else pays it, and it's still worth it — the Temple of Dendur alone justifies the trip.

The Halal Guys original cart, 53rd St & 6th Ave. Every chicken-and-rice halal cart in America traces back to this exact corner, where a trio of Egyptian immigrants started selling platters to cab drivers in 1990. A combo platter — chicken, gyro, rice, white sauce, hot sauce if you're brave — runs $10-12, and the line still wraps the block after 2am on weekends.

Improv 101 at Upright Citizens Brigade. UCB built its whole reputation on taking people who have never improvised in their life and getting them comfortable on stage by the end of one course — SNL and Parks and Rec alumni all started exactly where you would. Around $500 for eight 3-hour sessions, not a single drop-in session, but the entire first class is designed around the fact that everyone in the room is new at this.

Staten Island Ferry. Completely free, always has been since 1997, and the 25-minute crossing passes within camera range of the Statue of Liberty and the Lower Manhattan skyline — a view Statue Cruises charges $25+ for from the other direction. Sit on the right side heading toward Staten Island for the best angle.

Central Park. 843 acres, free every day, and still the single most-photographed park on Earth — the Bow Bridge and Bethesda Terrace alone justify the trip. Rent a rowboat at the Loeb Boathouse ($20/hr) if you want one genuine splurge; everything else here, including the free summer concerts on the Great Lawn, costs nothing.
