National Gallery of Art. Free, every day, no timed entry required — rare for a collection this deep. The West Building holds the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci on public display in the Americas (Ginevra de' Benci); the East Building's Calder mobile hangs over the entire atrium. Budget at least half a day if you want to see both wings properly.

Lincoln Memorial. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered "I Have a Dream" from the steps in 1963 — a small inscribed marker on the landing above the reflecting pool marks the exact spot. Free, open 24 hours, and genuinely worth returning to at night once the crowds thin and the statue is lit from below.

United States Capitol. The cast-iron dome — not stone, despite how it reads from the Mall — is topped by the 19.5-foot bronze Statue of Freedom, hoisted into place in 1863 while the Civil War was still underway, a deliberate statement that the Union intended to keep building. Free guided tours run through the Capitol Visitor Center but need advance reservation through a member of Congress's office or the online system; same-day passes are limited.
