Lands End Trail. Shipwreck remains are still visible at low tide from parts of this coastal bluff trail, and the ruined Sutro Baths at the trailhead once housed the largest indoor swimming pool complex in the world before burning down in 1966. Completely free, and the Golden Gate Bridge view from the Eagle's Point overlook rivals anything you'd pay to see elsewhere in the city.

Twin Peaks. At 922 feet, this is the highest point most visitors can drive almost all the way to the top of, leaving just a short walk for a genuine 360-degree view over every neighborhood in the city at once. Free, no ticket or reservation, though the wind at the summit is famously relentless even on a warm day.

Bay to Breakers route. This is the actual course of one of the oldest annual footraces in the country, held since 1912, cutting 7.5 miles straight across the city from the Embarcadero to Ocean Beach. Free to run anytime outside race day itself (the third Sunday in May), when it turns into one of the most famously chaotic, costume-filled races in the country.
